Exceed Shovel Knight is shipping in Q4! You can pre-order your copy from our online store and get an awesome Shovel Knight playmat as part of the bundle! Look out for a new Knight preview each week as we prepare for the game's release!
The Plague of Shadows’ protagonist is here! Plague Knight was an interesting character to design because he is one of the playable members of the Order. From creating customized explosives to huge bursts of movement, we’ve tried to capture the things that make playing as Plague Knight so much fun. We’re sure you’ll have a blast!
Key Design Idea: Controlled Chaos
The bigger the explosion; the better the alchemist! That’s Plague Knight’s catchphrase and we completely agree! Plague Knight’s ability allows him to “graft” Before, Hit, and After effects from one card to another; similar to how he can make custom bombs in Plague of Shadows. However, explosives are, by their nature, volatile, so which exact cards get mixed together are out of Plague Knight’s direct control! That’s not to say that this alchemist has no control over his own creations.
A lot of Plague Knight’s gameplay comes down to managing his hand to make sure that he gets the right effects on the right cards. Boosts like Berserker’s Brew allow Plague Knight to quickly get rid of certain cards in his hand before striking, significantly increasing his chances of discarding the perfect card with his Unique Ability. Of course, that +3 Power is nothing to sneeze at either!
But enough with the “control”; let’s get to the CHAOS! Cards like Giant Bomb and Triple Dose (above) are fairly innocuous, being typical pseudo-Sweeps. However, where most characters see consistency, Plague Knight sees potential! With the correct discards on his Unique Ability, things can easily spiral out of control. You’ll see Giant Bombs that Close 2 and give you Advantage, Triple Doses that Advance 3 spaces thrice (you read that right), and more. The possibilities for wacky and explosive combos are endless!
Plague Knight’s ability has him discarding cards left and right, meaning that he often runs himself out of cards fast. To help with this, Plague Knight comes with a large variety of refill options like his Chain Reaction, which draws you up to 4 cards!
Be careful, however, because you could easily deck yourself out with all your card draw!
I hope you all enjoyed looking at Plague Knight with me this week! Tune in next time for more members of the Order of No Quarter!
