Empyreal: Spells & Steam is a rail-building game set in Level 99 Games's World of Indines (BattleCON, Pixel Tactics, Argent), and the next major design from Trey Chambers (Argent: the Consortium). Coming to Kickstarter this April!
In my previous update, I posted previews of three different companies. Check out the first part of that post to see how to read the player boards and to learn about the general flow of the game. In this update, I'll show off the final three companies in the game!
You can see some evolution in the look of the player boards since last week, particularly in the reference area, between these updates and the previous ones.
As I head up the development for this game, we're continuing to search for optimal balance between the different elements of play–how much mana to start with, how many deliveries to end the game at, what prices to use to moving the conductor piece, the activation costs of the different spaces, and what benefits to give when reaching the end of your line. Expect more differences as we continue testing to make Empyreal the best possible game!
The engineers of this national railway service hail from a blasted wasteland in the southern region of Indines. Skilled at building over dangerous terrain, Gesselheim Imperial is able to plow through wastelands that would slow or halt other developers–often at the same time as they are creating it.
Bartok, chief engineer of Gesselheim Imperial, is able to build over wasteland or place down new wasteland. Since this terrain is extremely difficult for other companies to deal with, he can build walls to lock up portions of the map, cutting off the advance of rivals.
A powerhouse of industrial development and technological excellence, Kerigan Transcontinental is an subsidiary of Kerigan Industries, one of the largest corporations in the world. Kerigan gathers the most talented specialists in Indines to their side, and is able to build up their company's ranks more quickly than competitors.
Rayleigh is an efficiency expert, and one of several scions of the Kerigan business empire. She can advance her conductor piece at no cost, allowing her to accelerate deliveries and control the pacing of the game.
Golden Sands Company
The Golden Sands Company is the national rail service of the holy Theocracy of Sanghalim. The western engineers are skilled in craftsmanship, and are able to fashion incredible new engines at a rate that puts foreign competitors to shame.
Seth Cremmul (of BattleCON fame) has now been appointed superintendent of the Golden Sands Company, and is in charge of uniting the western world through transportation. His ability to coordinate allows him to waive the cost of activating multiple engines in a single turn. This ability is quite powerful during the end phases of the game.
